Preamble. It is often difficult to translate into words what a visual artist chooses to express through his or her work. And it's not easy to fit into a conceptual process where writing is very important. When I'm asked to talk about my work, it's hard for me to talk about it, because I've already put everything into it. Thematic. We spend more and more time on voyeuristic apps, which look into people's lives and let other people look into your life. What makes these apps popular is that they enable voyeuristic behavior. Voyeurism goes hand in hand with our society of image supremacy, whether doctored or not, and fake news. This concept of the viewer-voyeur has always interested me, especially since a work of art always needs a viewer as a complement of creation to exist. Voyeuristic practices can take many forms, but their main characteristic is that the voyeur does not interact directly with his subject, who is often unaware that he is being "observed. The "voyeur" is often depicted observing the situation from a distance, looking through an opening, a keyhole (see below) or using binoculars, a mirror, a camera, etc. In my early sculptures from the 1980s/90s, I had already addressed the theme of voyeurism with the series of sculptures devoted to Lady Godiva. In defiance, Lady Godiva rode naked through Coventry. The character of Peeping Tom, the only inhabitant who had the audacity to look at the rider (and became blind in the process), represents me. He is a metaphor for my work as an artist, whose retina is photographically (and emotionally) impressed by so many things that he sometimes wishes he could perceive the world through senses other than sight. I draw, paint, photograph, film and sculpt in order to get rid of too many images. In recent weeks, I have painted a series of nudes (backs), in connection with voyeurism and the key tool of voyeurism of our time, the smartphone. My goal as a voyeur-artist is to give the freedom to the voyeur-viewer to interpret the shapes, texture, movement and colors in their own way, according to their experience. While it is best for everyone to tell their own story in front of a work, I will nevertheless reveal some aspects of it. The work I am presenting in this year 2023 is the painting "Smart-eye-phone". This painting is an acrylic on canvas of 80x100, with a Samsung tablet magnetized on the canvas. It is part of an exhibition project including five works (see "projects" in the "more info" section on my website www.danieljanssens.be) This project "Voyeur-isthme"(1) is declined as follows: 1. In the painting "Smart-eye-phone" the face of the painted woman in the foreground is replaced by a tablet which, when the viewer-voyeur approaches, turns on and triggers the projection of the animated face of the painted woman. This painted face becomes pixelated (see the pixelated paintings "Access denied" and "Carrés") and then transforms into a "perfect" face, that of the "most beautiful woman in the world", artificially created by a computer program called "E-fit", usually used for the robot portraits of criminals. It finally metamorphoses into a swollen woman's face with her right hand over her mouth. In the background, another naked young woman holds a smartphone in her hand. Is she taking a picture of the viewer in an act of voyeurism, or is she taking a selfie? Around the frame of the painting is a "crown" of laminated news photos, related to violence against women. See also "Access Denied" below. 2. The second part of the project consists of two canvases, each with a box. Entitled "Access denied" and "Carrés", they show two female nudes "mosaicked" and/or "blurred". In the first canvas, "Squares" (50x70cm), the colored squares remind us of the white square (or rectangle), which disappeared a long time ago, and which signaled, in the lower corner of television screens, the possible irruption of images that could "shock". This white rectangle, rather than making people look away, aroused curiosity. Here too, the colored squares show the naked body while concealing it. In the box, behind the keyhole-shaped mirror that encourages the eye to stick to it, a video projects images of recent news: war in Ukraine (images of the conflict, soldiers, tanks, destroyed buildings, ... ), COVID (images of the virus, people wearing medical masks, hospital scenes, social distancing, vaccines, quarantine sign, vaccine syringe, hospital bed), the energy crisis (images of power plants, oil rigs, gas prices, renewable energy sources) and climate change (images of melting glaciers, flooded cities, drought. ..), fake news (misleading headlines, manipulated images, conspiracy theories, propaganda, social media posts containing false information ...), violence on social media (images of online harassment ...). 4. There are other paintings that enter the sphere of voyeurism. In the series of four almost identical bare backs "#2A-B-C-D" (except for the colors), a smartphone showing the photo of the actual back connects the four paintings together. 5. In the painting "Voyeur#3", the features of the voyeur take a strange form, reminiscent of the face of the devil or a superhero. 6. The fifth and final part consists of paintings of "classical" nude backs, to return to "academic" normality (watercolors, pastels, acrylics).

My current obsession, more than the female body, and the male-female relationship, is the face, the head, which contains the right and left brain, which is the essence of the duality I want to stage here. Finally, for about a year now, I have been compulsively practicing Zentangle (see https://zentangle.com/pages/what-is-the-zentangle-method and my website http://danieljanssen4.wixsite.com/artgallery). The objective of my installation is to show the duality in the life of a man-artist, which presides over every creative act and makes every choice infinitely complex. The symbols are: 1. Janus : the Roman god of beginnings and ends, of choices. My double Janus profile, one side turned towards white, the color, the other towards black and dark, is "reflective" (a double entendre word). 2. The good, the right, the decent (represented by the white) facing the bad, the indecent (the black). 3. To have at the same time "the head in the clouds" and the feet anchored in reality, even stuck in the mire, the feet being the lowest part, the darkest, the most salacious of this hateful "me", of which Blaise Pascal spoke (see symbolism of the shoe). 4. The symbolism of the shoe (à la YAYOI KUSAMA), sexual symbol if there is one. Symbolism of "walking on eggs" and symbolism of "walking on someone's head". 5. This installation makes use of all the techniques that I practice: drawing, pastel, painting, sculpture (the only thing missing is video). Following on from my teeming 2015 installation "From Head to Toe", I have constructed a new 4-part installation around 3 central elements taken from the first: two heads and a glazed clay statuette, adding several recent "zentangles". Description from top to bottom : Part 1: a brain above a double profile (Janusian) in wood covered with a mirror sheet. On the left a zentangle in a white frame (10x15) of a head above which spreads like a kind of volcanic explosion - on the right another larger zentangle (A4 size) in a black frame showing from left to right, a framed text on the modernity of the zentangle, a face painted in color in a white frame (10x15), another face, more demonic, with only one eye in a black frame (10x15) . Part 2: in the central part, a large face in watercolor, a female nude back in dry pastel in a white frame, a manipulated photo with the ironic mention "Hygienic protection" on the covered part of the nude model and an A4 size zentangle framed in black inspired by Takashi Murakami's "The Lonesome Cowboy"; on the far right, a heart in white glazed ceramic The next part (3) includes another zentangle of a female body, then the representation of the male sex by a statuette surrounded by two heads, and a little lower, a black framed A4 zentangle showing a man and a woman with "explosive" sexual attributes. The last part (4), at the very bottom of the installation, is composed of two shoes à la Yayoi Kusama, one, golden, on four eggs, the other, lead-colored, is on the head of a woman in white glazed ceramic. In the middle of the two shoes, on a cylindrical wooden base, is a naked male figure, his head in his hands, facing a difficult choice.

At the Academy, I started to use pastel, which allows me to paint while drawing, without the need for the extension of the brush, by being as close as possible to the support. My desire was to give form to my fascination for the female body, in a virtual caress. My first artistic acts were therefore paintings/drawings on large format paper (100 x 70 and more) of nudes, mostly female. I continued to paint with acrylic, on canvas, with brush and knife, nudes, characters, portraits, sketching the silhouettes with bright colors, accentuating the simplicity of forms, the anonymity of faces, the ambiguity of situations. My latest paintings are mini-installations combining paintings, boxes containing various objects and MP3 players, or reproduce ancient paintings of Adam and Eve from the Renaissance or Baroque period, modified by the addition of contemporary symbols, stencils of faces of celebrities, actors, artists, etc... and/or quotations (e.g. "The human race is a monotonous story" - Goethe). These latest paintings are nearing completion. In parallel to painting and drawing, I discovered clay and ceramics in a collective workshop. Self-taught sculptor, I started by giving shape to classical nudes, then a series of sculptures representing Lady Godiva (who rode naked on horseback and was "spied" by a voyeur, a metaphor of the artist I am), a series of sculptures of women jumping in the air, inspired by Rik Wouters' "Joie de Vivre", and, finally, busts (e.g. 5-headed bust). The latter were crowned by the beginnings of the heads that I am currently shaping. At the moment my obsession with faces and bodies is taking shape in a multitude of heads with only a hint of a face, and figures without arms, sitting with their torsos bent down towards their feet. These heads and bodies, of a stripped, primitive or multicolored workmanship, compose an installation, entitled "From Head to Toe-Head stories". To date, 150 heads and 20 seated figures have been made, in normal and patinated kiln-fired clay, in paper or raku kiln, or glazed, identical in size but each different and unique. Depending on the space that hosts it, this installation can take different forms, geometric or symbolic, for example that of a circle constituted by the seated figures surrounding the heads arranged in a spiral. It is this work (or, in a limited space, a part of it - see photos and the note of intention below) that I would like to present, because it illustrates my questioning as an artist: what is the body without the arms, and the head without the body, how to have both feet on the ground and one's head in the clouds, how to reconcile the carnal and the spirit, the being and the doing, how to live and think, love and reflect.

Daniel Janssens's Project for the
"Monument to Mankind" (2007)
monumentmankind.jpg

Foreword: Belgium is a very small country characterized by its three very different cultural communities: o the Flemish-speaking community (roughly 5.5 million), where I was born and lived for several years, o the French-speaking community (roughly 4 million inhabitants), where I now live, o and the much smaller German-speaking community (roughly 500,000), which is very near the town where I live. In 1993 our country became a federation with a central government that looks after the communities' sometimes conflicting interests. Our Royal Family keeps our country united, despite the communities' ever increasing cultural, economic, and social differences. Since its creation in 1830, the motto of our country has been “Union makes (people) strong", but this motto has rarely been put into practice. But on October 20, 1996, a remarkable event united our three communities, like never before. Almost half a million citizens (mostly families with children) marched in the streets of our capital Brussels (also the capital of the European Community), holding a white balloon in their hands. Those who couldn't be there physically, supported them with all their heart. This peaceful demonstration was more a demonstration of solidarity than a mere political demonstration for a more transparent democracy. I found the white balloon to be a very apt and universal symbol of innocence, hope and solidarity, that befits this project of a multinational monument for mankind. Although Belgium is only 172 years old, its culture is old and extremely rich. Yet, I chose to illustrate the more recent, more "modern" aspects of Belgian culture, that have enhanced our country since its birth in 1830. To recap, two symbols connected with childhood and play are at the base of my project: the balloon, for its innocence and lightness, as opposed to the massive stone block, and the puzzle, which stands for the varied cultural influences that are at work in my country and reflects the fact that despite their differences, all the people are linked.

Facade 2 and 3: - Facade two shows another balloon, held by a thread. The balloon is carved in the stone and contains the profile of one of Belgium's most famous heroes: Hergé's cartoon hero Tintin. The Belgian "cartoon school", with cartoonists like Hergé, Morris, Jacobs, Peyo, Franquin, etc..., has influenced all other cartoon schools. Tintin is a reporter and an adventurer who never hesitates to confront with the forces of evil and protect the weak, the minorities, the oppressed. Yet, he is also the antithesis of the superhero, he is a characterless, neutral hero, with whom most readers can easily identify. To me, because of this, Tintin is especially suitable as a cultural symbol of the average Belgian, certainly more so than Hercule Poirot, who was made famous by Agatha Christie. - Facade three shows a saxophone, which was invented by Adolphe Sax, and three balloons coming out of it, inside which the outline of three music instruments will be sculpted: the top end of Django Reindhardt's jazz guitar, Toots Thielemans's harmonica, the top end of Eugène Ysaye's violin (Eugène Ysaye is a classical music composer and violin player). All four were born in Belgium. There is no need to underline the "pacifying" role of music and its universal appeal; music is also one of the simplest ways of bringing people, any people, all people, together.

Facade one of the sculpture represents Belgium's three cultural communities: three figures in the shape of puzzle pieces are shown, one male, one female and one child, symbolizing of course a family. The bodies will be outlined by carving them in the stone. The puzzle pieces reflect our mixed and interwoven cultural heritage. The heads will be bronze heads (see example of the man's head in attached profile.jpg; a model of the female head has already been sculpted in clay but is still drying). They will be fastened (screwed) onto the stone above the outlines of the bodies. The child's head is in fact a balloon, in polished stainless steel (which will act as a mirror, reflecting whatever will come in front of it), which is captured inside a recess hewn in the stone, filling it entirely. Inside the three bodies, there is a crossword puzzle with the names of twenty, in my opinion, culturally important and famous Belgians, born after 1830 or whose inventions were made after 1830. The names of these famous Belgians are - in random order: Merckx (the cyclist champion), Spaak (politician, one of the founders of the European Community), Alechinsky, Magritte, Delvaux, Ensor, Folon, Permeke, Wouters (painters, sculptors), Claus, Yourcenar and Simenon (novelists), Brel (poet and singer), Gramme (inventor of the dynamo), Solvay (industrialist who first produced caustic soda), Gevaert (industrialist who created a chemical factory where, for the first time, workers received a part of the profits), Prigogine (one of our Nobel Prize winners), Horta, the "art nouveau" architect, Cuisenaire (Belgian teacher who invented the famous cuisenaire rods, which are used to illustrate the basic operations of arithmetic, as well as the principles of place value, fractions, and factoring; they are also used in the teaching of modern languages) Leo Hendrik Baekeland (the famous Belgian chemist, known for his invention, circa 1906, of the synthetic resin later known as Bakelite.

Facade 4 and top facade: - Facade four shows the Atomium, the symbol of the 1958 Brussels World Fair. Since its creation in 1958, the Atomium has become a symbol of the 20th Century, the century during which the atom was fully mastered and became widely used by man, profoundly affecting the development of our society. In 1958 Brussels hosted the World Fair and a symbol to celebrate scientific progress was needed. Engineer André Waterkeyn hit upon the idea of the Atomium, which represents the molecular structure of iron crystals, magnified 165 billion times. The iron and steel industry played a key role in the industrialization of my country in the l9th century, and its decline in the nineteen seventies and eighties caused a major recession in lots of areas. The atomium's nine spheres also represent Belgium's original nine provinces. One of the lower spheres has been made into yet another balloon, held by a hand, so that the entire Atomium can be seen as a complex balloon, symbolizing scientific progress lifting man into a better future. - The top facade has a stainless-steel cupola in the middle, fixed to the stone. This cupola, 20 cm high and 20 cm in diameter, represents the upper part of a balloon that is coming out of the stone block, ready to fly away, and is at the same time one of the distinct architectural features of Horta's "Art Nouveau". Ten steel figurines, reminiscent of the three figures on facade one, surround it. These figurines are between 10 cm and 15 cm high and symbolize the population of Belgium's ten provinces, underlining the fact that Belgium is one of the most densely populated country in the world. These figurines and the cupola are a sort of crown that tops the block, a reminder of the culturally unifying role of our Royal Family. Extra feature: on the top corner between facade 4 and facade l, a stainless-steel circle representing a Belgian invention, Joseph Plateau's Phénokistiscope, revolves on a 3 cm high axis. Since Aristotle and Ptolemy, physicists know that our retina retains the vision of the pictures we see for some time. This led in 1833 to the invention of the Phénakistiscope, which is the ancestor of the modern cinema projector. This is a tribute to the 7th Art, to which recent Belgian feature and animated films have greatly contributed.
